| Description | Mnemonic is a non-profit organisation at the forefront of archiving, preserving, and forensically verifying digital open-source information as documentation of human rights violations and international crimes. Formally incorporated as an organisation in 2018, we began our activities as Syrian Archive in 2014, a rapid response project working in close collaboration with journalists, documentation groups, and citizens fighting to preserve digital information of the Syrian Conflict: images, videos, and other postings as invaluable historical artifacts and potential evidence of human rights abuses. Mnemonic grew out of the recognition that Syrian Archive’s workflows could be adapted to other locations where human rights violations must be documented and preserved, but the ecosystems to do so remain underdeveloped. To safeguard over 30 million digital records–equivalent to over 100 years’ worth of video–in our Archives that cover Syria, Ukraine, Sudan, Yemen and Iran, Mnemonic has developed advanced digital tools and a robust in-house infrastructure to ensure the integrity of our data. Mnemonic honours the work of journalists, civil society organisations and individuals who risk their lives to document atrocities, by safely archiving potential evidence and verifying it in line with the highest standards required for legal proceedings and accountability mechanisms. Mnemonic has contributed to groundbreaking legal initiatives, including arrest warrants issued in France against Syria’s then-President al-Assad and three other senior officials. We proactively contribute to field-building with sectoral publications for human rights defenders and open-source investigators, including a Guide for Judges and Fact-Finders created in partnership with UC Berkeley and the University of Oxford. |
