| Description | The IAF is a nimble and transformative U.S. government agency that invests in locally-led development across Latin America and the Caribbean. We directly engage community leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs working to make our region and their communities more prosperous, peaceful, and democratic. The IAF does not use any DC-based implementers or subcontractors that would increase the overhead cost of programming. Investments in grantee overhead go to strengthening enduring local institutions and ensuring the sustainability of IAF grants. Organizational strengthening over the course of IAF grantmaking is a key strategy that has led to organizations still thriving twenty and thirty years after they graduate from IAF funding. The IAF works with organizations to expand their income-generating and fundraising capacities, strengthen their board structures, and improve their financial systems. Grantees also leverage additional funding and in-kind resources to co-invest in their own projects, more than doubling the U.S. investment (as of FY 2025, committing $1.37 for every $1 in IAF investment in their projects, increasing community ownership, self-reliance, and project sustainability over time). |
