| Description | AVSI has been present in South Sudan since 1992 and in 2005 opened its first permanent base in the state of Eastern Equatoria. In recent years AVSI has gained deep experience in the fields of education, agriculture and food security. In the state of the Lakes, AVSI has been implementing food security projects since 2011 with particular attention to issues related to security and peacebuilding, components that have an important influence on the success of activities and on the general improvement of the context in which it operates. In Eastern Equatoria AVSI is one of the most operational organizations in the field of education; UNICEF's main partner, AVSI staff deals with projects that support the educational apparatus both from a structural point of view and from the point of view of teacher training and community awareness, one of the strengths of the organization. In addition, also in Eastern Equatoria, AVSI has now acquired a primary position also in the field of food security and agricultural development, supporting the most vulnerable families with emergency distributions while investing in local farmers with a view to strengthening the resilience and self-sufficiency of local communities. Although there is a particular focus on these two sectors, AVSI works for the holistic development of the person and his community, engaging in a multi-sectoral approach that has allowed the staff to acquire specific professional skills also in the field of nutrition, water and protection; these elements are always considered in the planning and implementation of project actions in such a way as to create synergies between different projects and create sustainability. Over the years, AVSI has built and strengthened links both with the local population – through village chiefs and traditional local authorities – and with institutional figures at the state and county levels. A constant and open dialogue with the beneficiaries of the projects has allowed AVSI to build, together with local actors, tailor-made solutions that respond in a particular way to the needs of the population, as demonstrated by the results produced by the emergency and resilience strengthening projects implemented in partnership with FAO (ERLP). |
